An Apery-like Difference Equation for Catalan's Constant
نویسنده
چکیده
Applying Zeilberger’s algorithm of creative telescoping to a family of certain very-well-poised hypergeometric series involving linear forms in Catalan’s constant with rational coefficients, we obtain a second-order difference equation for these forms and their coefficients. As a consequence we derive a new way of fast calculation of Catalan’s constant as well as a new continued-fraction expansion for it. Similar arguments are put forward to deduce a second-order difference equation and a new continued fraction for ζ(4) = π4/90.

Deresonating a Tate Period
We introduce a technique to compute monodromy periods in certain families of algebraic varieties by perturbing (‘deresonating’) the fiberwise Betti to de Rham comparison off the motivic setting. As an application, we find Apery periods of Grassmannians G(2, N) and identify the Apery numbers for the equations D3 of the Mukai threefolds with certain L–values. We show that the argument of the L–fu...
متن کاملHow Much Should a 19th-Century French Bastard Inherit
Catalan's formula, for the portion of the inheritance that a legitimate child of a 19th-century deceased French gentleman should receive, is given a new proof (using Difference Operators), and generalized. Another, more computationally efficient, formula is also derived. Catalan's Formula Chrystal's classical text[Ch] (II, p. 416) contains the following charming exercise, due to Cata-lan[Ca]. B...
متن کاملOn Polynomials Related to Powers of the Generating Function of Catalan's Numbers
Catalan's sequence of numbers {C„}% = {1,1,2,5,14,42,...} (nr.1459 and ,4000108 of [14]) emerges in the solution of many combinatorial problems (see [2], [4], [5], and [16] for further references). The moments ju2k of the normalized weight function of Chebyshev's polynomials of the second kind are given by Ck /2 (see, e.g., [3], Lemma 4.3, p. 160 for /= 0, and [17], p. II3). This sequence also ...

Let X be a Hilbert-space valued martingale and Y a real-valued supermartingale which are orthogonal and with Y diierentially subordinate to X. Then where the constant (2) is Catalan's constant whose approximate value is 0:915965594. The constant K is B. Davis' constant in the Kolmogorov's weak-type inequality for conjugate harmonic functions in the unit disk. The inequality is sharp.
متن کاملAn efficient numerical method for singularly perturbed second order ordinary differential equation
In this paper an exponentially fitted finite difference method is presented for solving singularly perturbed two-point boundary value problems with the boundary layer. A fitting factor is introduced and the model equation is discretized by a finite difference scheme on an uniform mesh. Thomas algorithm is used to solve the tri-diagonal system. The stability of the algorithm is investigated. It ...
